Column fun
So, you've been chosen, amongst all the illustrious applicants, to be a babelguides.com columnist.  Congrats and here's the instructions to help you get started.

Submitting a column

  1. log in to the site

  2. click on forum in the menu

  3. click on Submit new post

  4. in #1, you are asked to choose a section, look for your column name (e.g. Willy's World) and select it

  5. in #2, select the literature(s) that you plan to include in your article

  6. follow the rest of the instructions as they appear in the sidebar

note we suggest that you use auto format syntax as the formatting of choice.  Please check out the auto format syntax link in the side column to learn more about it.

Links in your column

In your column, you can add links to three different types of records in our database; a work, a person, or a publisher.

  • WORK ID. The numbers are "work ids" which identify a translated work -- i.e. a combination of author,title,translator; it can be published multiple times but would still be considered the same "work". Find work ids by looking at the URL for a work page: e.g.
    http://www.babelguides.com/view/work/7886
    The work id here is 7886

  • PERSON ID. The numbers are "person ids" which identify a person -- i.e. an author, translator, or reviewer.  If a person is one or many of the above, they still only have one person id number. Find person ids by looking at the URL for a work page: e.g.
    http://www.babelguides.com/view/person/4536
    The person id here is 4536

  • PUBLISHER ID. The numbers are "publisher ids" which identify the publisher of a work.  Find publisher ids by looking at the URL for a publisher page: e.g.
    http://www.babelguides.com/view/publisher/60
    The publisher id here is 60

OK now that you understand the types of links,  you now need to decide how you want them to appear on the page.  You have two options; visible or invisible.

Visible links

these appear in the column as a link and in the side bar with a link and image where appropriate.

  1. find your work, person, or publisher ID by viewing the corresponding page's URL

  2. put the following tag directly in your text with the appropriate elements :
    <bg:link class="work" id="8789" />

    where class=work OR pub OR person OR guide and the ID corresponds to the record that you've chosen.

Invisible links

these do NOT appear in the column.  they appear only in the side bar with a link and image where appropriate.  You can put these anywhere in the column, but may prefer to put them at the beginning or the end. These instructions are the same as above except the tag is different.

  1. find your work, person, or publisher ID by viewing the corresponding page's URL

  2. put the following tag directly in your text with the appropriate elements :
    <bg:link class="work" id="8789" hidden="true" />

    where class=work OR pub OR person OR guide and the ID corresponds to the record that you've chosen.
