Atlas Press began in 1984, more or less by accident. Two of us were lamenting the unavailability of the sort of writing we were really interested in, at that time many important areas of European art and literature were untranslated or had long since been allowed to go out of print
There were two of us, we published a few, very modest collections, and Atlas gradually came into being. We are still very small, we publish books because we want to see them available, because they seem important, we cannot ignore commercial considerations, but they are not paramount.
Our aim as publishers has been to delineate a coherent "anti-tradition" whose roots reach back to Romanticism, an oppositional literary and artistic manifestation which, in its various guises, has maintained an obstinate presence within an inimical host: the literary establishment. Our list draws on the totality of this tradition, we publish titles dating from the 1890s, just as we publish new and unknown authors and artists of the present day.
